Game 118 - Dwarves - 2014/08/25

Greetings!

I had an opportunity to play against my friend in the local store. I discovered the fact I had one nearby by pure chance and it happened that they are open longer on Thursdays so we decided to give it a go. Especially that they have some tables ready.

Me and my friend often met at tournaments but we played against each other only once. He wanted to test his new Dwarves as he was intrigued by the new book. He had a force comprised almost entirely of old school models, with only a single new regiment. I don't remember all the details at the moment but hopefully I will get them soon.

Game 117 - Ogre Kingdoms - 2014/08/20

Greetings!

Darth Sabre is one of the players who owns more than one army and he wanted to test his Ogre Kingdom force. He also wanted to try new approach to it, so that it is not a standard Gutstar type of an army. I am sure Jimmy the Beastmaster would approve! :)

This is the army list Darth came up with:

Game 116 - Empire - 2014/08/02

Greetings!

Despite lots of work in real life I am very happy to have some regular opportunities to play Warhammer recently. After 2 games against O&G Eastern Barbarian came up with another idea for unorthodox army, this time based on Empire army book. However, I think you may find some similarities to the O&G armies he fielded previously. I will provide the details as soon as I get them, here is the list from the memory.

Game 115 - High Elves - 2014/07/30

Greetings!

Darth Sabre of Ulthuan fame offered me a chance to play at his place so I jumped at the opportunity to play some garage hammer! Oh, and this game is dedicated to Mr. Nick "The Short Shorts" Gentile from the Dwellers Below since we ... played on Wednesday! :)

Darth had some options to choose from as I know he has experimented with a few different army lists recently. Last time we played against each other at CanCon 2014 he had cavalry prince themed force. He opted to field a similar list this time as well. In fact, I think this army was tougher. Here are the details:

High Elves - Army List
Cavalry Prince, Barded Elven Steed, Dragon Armor, Giant Blade, Enchanted Shield, Dawnstone
Archmage, Level 4, Talisman of Preservation, Book of Hoeth - Lore of Life
BSB, Barded Elven Steed, Dragon Armor, Shield, Dragonhelm, Ogre Blade

Game 114 - Orcs & Goblins - 2014/07/07

Greetings!

Wardancer aka Estern Barbarian (for UB users) was definitely not happy with the result of the first game and since he needed more practice before the upcoming tournament we managed to schedule another game. He made some army list adjustments while keeping 2 Wyvern theme:

Game 113 - Orcs & Goblins - 2014/07/02

Greetings!

My "regular" sparring partner, Eastern Barbarian (known was wardancer on warhammer.org.uk) is preparing his O&G army for the upcoming tournament and wanted to test yet another of his unorthodox armies. This time he lined up some Orcs and Goblins but with double Wyvern riders! We played with closed lists so I didn't know about his magic items and the list below is the one I have obtained after the game. Bear that in mind for the reminder of the report! The tournament he is going to attend is using Swedish composition too. In addition, there is no mysterious terrain. His army list with details was as follows:

Orcs & Goblins - Army List

Warboss, Shield, Spear, Wyvern, Talisman of Preservation, Dragonbane Gem, The Other Trickster Shard - General
Warboss, Spear, Wyvern, Charmed Shield

Game 112 - Warriors of Chaos - 2014/06/07

Game 5 - Charles - Warriors of Chaos - Battle for the Pass

In my last game I played against Charles who is a veteran of Warhammer. He used to win tournaments a decade ago and he wrote this excellent article everybody should read:

Irresistible Force - Issue 4

we were about to play modified Battle for the Pass scenario where there were three counters on the battle field. If your unit ended the game on it you got the objective and 200VP bonus points for each.

Charles had a very intriguing army, both in terms of composition and visual effects. It was modelled with the use of Easterlings miniatures from Lord of the Rings series but the characters were special too.

Easterlings of Chaos – Army List

Scylla Anfinngrim (Shelob) – General
Sorcerer Lord of Tzeentch (Sauron), level 4, Disk, Sword of Might, Earthing Rod, Enchanted Shield, Talisman of Preservation, The Third Eye of Tzeentch, Flaming BreathLore of Tzeentch

Game 4 - John - Monsters of Chaos - Blood and Glory

Game 4 and this time I met John, another frequent attendant of the tournaments (both WFB and 40K I might add) and this particular event organizer (one of two). We were about to play Blood and Glory scenario where breaking the enemy gave you extra victory points but didn't stop the game. How hard you broke them also mattered as:

1. If you break your enemy - 200VP
2. If you are first to break the enemy - 200VP
3. If the enemy is broken and 1 fortitude point below his breaking point - 200VP
4. If the enemy is broken and 2 fortitude point below his breaking point - 200VP

Breaking point at 2400 is 3.

I was about to face yet another Forces of Destruction army, yet another Warriors of Chaos force but this time of the Monster of Chaos flavour:

Monsters of Chaos - Army List

Throgg - King of Trolls
Festus the LeechlordLore of Nurgle

Game 3 - Spencer - Tzeentch Warriors - Meeting Engagement

In the third game I had a great pleasure to play against Spencer and his Tzeentch Warriors. I have never played against Spencer before but I know he finished 8th on CanCon 2014! We played Meeting Engagement scenario with no modifications to the rules from the rule book. Warriors of Chaos are always a tough opponent and this time the challenge was to try and win against he following army list:

Warriors of Tzeentch - Army List

Chaos Lord,  Disc of Tzeentch; Mark of Tzeentch, Talisman of Endurance; Hellfire Sword; Enchanted Shield; Third Eye of Tzeentch; Flaming Breath; Soul Feeder

Game 109 - Beastmen - 2014/05/13

Game 2 - Adam - Beastmen - Dawn Attack

Adam is a very active tournament player, a fellow Master player and the guy responsible for that unique 8-dragon slayers Dwarven army that was on everybody lips before Masters tournament. Somehow, despite taking part in many other tournaments at the same time and often being very close to each other on the ladder, we have never played a single game. This time fate finally pitched us against each other.

Adam is also known for having multitude of armies and for taking different forces to different events. This time he chose Beastie Boyz:

Beastmen - Army List

Doombull, Heavy Armour, Shield, Sword of Swift Slaying, Ramhorn Helm, Dawnstone, Gnarled Hide
Great Bray-Shaman, Level 4, Dispel Scroll - Lore of the Beasts

Game 108 - Dwarves - 2014/05/11

Greetings!

I have just returned from a local tournament hosted by ANU Wargaming Society. It was a small event that attracted attention of 18 players. I really hope that number will swell in future years, as they guys did fantastic job and it was a great pleasure to attend again! It was 2 day tournament with 5 games at 2400 points total. It had scenarios, some of them modified. I will explain them when I write the report from the particular battle where they were used. There was also a nice addition to the players pack that allowed to take allies. One could either enter with monolithic army or get main force at 1800 with allied contingent at 600. Both forces had to be composed according to the rules as if they were separate armies. Only alliances from trusted allies were allowed, as per rulebook.

Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to play against allied force and I didn't field one either. But I know some armies were composed according to the rules for allies.

As it seemed it could have been my last tournament in Canberra (at least for time being) I wanted to use the opportunity and grudge one of the players I met plenty of times but have never had an opportunity to play against. It was of course my fault and I am sorry I didn't organize myself better to play earlier or in fact, regularly.

Game 1 - Dave - Dwarves - Battle Line

Dave is a very well known person in the Australian community of warhammer players as he is one of the most active tournament organizers. Thanks to him (and his helpers!) the biggest and longest event in Oz, CanCon, took place in January. Fortunately, there are also some other TO's in the local scene, so he can have fun with rolling dice and pushing mandollies forward too!

Not only he kindly agreed to accept my grudge but he also brought a brand new Dwarven army! It was my first encounter with Dwarves after they got their book revisited. Dave had a lot of alternative models as well as new ones in his army and I can't wait to see all these great miniatures and fantastic conversions painted!

Below is his list with all the details (Many thanks to Dave himself who also provided all the lists of my opponents so I have all the items right for a change :)).

Dwarves - Army List

Game 107 - Monsters of Chaos - 2014/04/11

Greetings!

My new army was about to be tested against yet another version of Monster of Chaos army list my most trusted sparring partner, Eastern Barbarian, decided to bring to the field. I had two games against similar list of his before so I was curious what iteration he is going to bring this time. Btw, I got the details after the game as we played with close lists.

Game 106 - High Elves - 2014/03/28

Game 8 - Michael - High Elves - Battle Line

Last game of CanCon! With High Elves being the most numerous of the armies it was difficult to avoid a civil war. I evaded them whole tournament but finally had to face them. However, the great thing was I was about to play against Michael, our own Darth Sabre! It is always great fun to meet another forum member in real life and what is more, we had a score to settle too! I had a pleasure to play against Michael 2 years ago at my first CanCon. Back then I was just beginning my journey with MSU and was lucky enough to win. I was sure Michael was very eager to even the score! :)

Any time I play against another HE army it is very special encounter. In games like that we counter our strengths in a unique way only so called mirror matches can. However, every time I played against HE it was never the force that fought in similar fashion to mine. That is always a great thing as it feels more like playing against a force with its own army book!

It was indeed the case this time as well. Michael commanded the following army (thanks for the army list details, Michael!):

High Elves - Army List

Prince, Barded Steed, Dragon Armour, Giant Blade, Enchanted Shield, Dawnstone
Loremaster of Hoeth, Charmed Shield, Staff of Sorcery, Talisman of Preservation
BSB, Barded Steed, Dragon Armour, Shield, Star Lance, Dragon Helm, Luckstone

Game 7 - Jason - Dwarves - Battle for the Pass

Another game of CanCon, this time Battle for the Pass and ... another Dwarven army to fight against :) This time I had a great pleasure to play against Jason and his great looking army.

Dwarves in their full glory - courtesy of ThaneG from wargamerau

King of the Hill! - courtesy of ThaneG from wargamerau

Playing against a defensive force in the battle for the pass is always a challenge. First, the distance usually is greater than in the normal Battle line scenario. Second, such armies tend to sport some good shooting units and that means that whatever makes to the other side of the pass might not be of any significant combat value. And third, narrower frontage meant it was way harder for me to outflank the enemy.

Technically, one could play defensively too and simply stay put. Some of the shooting elements do not have that long range and these that do may not be sufficient to kill enough of your forces to get many victory points on their own. Of course there are exceptions. But that would have made for a dull and boring game.

As you could have already noticed from the picture above, Jason's army was not gunline type that gave me some hope.

Dwarves - Army List

King, Shieldbearers, Rune of Challenge
Runesmith, 3 x Rune of Spellbreaking
Thane, BSB

40 Longbeards, Great Weapons, Full Command
30 Hammerers, Full Command

Game 6 - James - Dwarves - Battle Line

In the game 6 I faced my friend James who brought his stalwart Dwarves to the tournament. I had an honour to face his army twice before so I am sure his Book of Grudges has some chapters about my elves and some score to settle! In fact, we played last year at CanCon and back then James challenged me in the first round!

I hope you will find the game interesting despite the fact it was still the army list from old army book for Dwarves.

Game 5 - Chris - Lizardmen - Blood and Glory

In the next game I had a pleasure to play against another Master player, winner of 2012 Masters and my opponent from round 1 of Masters 2013 - Chris. Last time we played Chris had his highly mobile, double dragon list with Death Archmage. I greatly enjoyed our first game and I was very happy to meet Chris on the field of battle again. I was sure I could learn a thing or two again and, what's more, it was going to be a very enjoyable game. I also hoped I could repeat my good result from our first encounter! However, I was also sure that Chris would be even a harder opponent to play against as he already knew my army while I - didn't really. This time, Chris brought a very fine looking Lizardmen army led by no other than a special character Tetto Ekko (apologies for spelling errors) and 2 Old Bloods!

Lizardmen - Army List

Game 102 - Empire - 2014/02/24

Game 4 - Greg - Empire - Battle Line

Game 4 (or game 1 of day 2 if you prefer!) was a good, old battle line. This time I had a great privilege and honour to play against Greg, Mr. Hoodling himself, a blogger of a great fame! Although we have participated in a few tournaments so far, we have never had a chance to play against each other. You can easily imagine how happy I was! :)

If you haven't checked Greg's blog you should immediately stop reading that report and visit his website. Here is the link to the post where he briefly discusses his army list and then proceeds to the report from his game 1:

The Hoodling's Hole - CanCon 2014

You will find many interesting posts, plenty of battle reports, Battle of Finuval Plains being one of the most famous ones. Greg has already posted his report from our game. It was a very rare opportunity to read about the game I played from the point of view of my opponent. Usually, I am very happy if the other player adds some comments about our game. Here is a full report! Check out this link if you want to read it, I highly recommend you do!

Hoodling vs Swordmaster - Imperial records

One of the great things about attending tournaments is that you have a chance to play against beautiful and thematic armies. Greg's force was one of these. His demigryph knights in particular were catching the eye of any player passing by. Here is his list with all the details:

Empire - Army List

Arch Lector on War Altar with Great Weapon, Heavy Armour, Shield, White Cloak of Ulric
Wizard Lord, Level 3, Warhorse, Scroll of Shielding, Talisman of Endurance - Lore of Light

Game 101 - Wood Elves - 2014/02/17

Game 3 - Johannes - Wood Elves - Meeting Engagement

Meeting Engagement is a tricky scenario. It allows for close deployment but has a chance to mess it up for you if are going to roll too many 1's. It also creates a little confusion as to how to deploy. On the other hand it can create some nice opportunities due to closer proximity of the troops.

This round I drew Johannes who played with beautifully converted Wood Elves army:

Johaness army in its full glory! Picture courtesy of ThaneG from wargamerau.com. The hand made dragon is there for occasional Transformation of Kadon spell

I have found out during the tournaments that Wood Elves players are one of the two kinds at the moment. First, great modellers and simply in love with their miniatures. They didn't abandon that army over the years simply because they like their collections too much. The fact that it is very difficult to play with such army is not a problem. Second, hardcore players, who like to win in style. Their grasp of the game is unsurpassed and they can teach you tricks you have never heard of. Being in one group does not mean you cannot be in the other one too!

Johannes brought the following force (unfortunately I still haven't obtained the army lists from the TO so sorry for lack of details):

Wood Elves - Army List

Treemen Ancient, Annoyance of Netlings - General
Spellweaver, Level 3, Dispel Scroll - Lore of the Beast

Game 99 - Warriors of Chaos - 2014/02/05

Game 1 - Jonathan - Warriors of Chaos - Dawn Attack

I met Jonathan at ConVic last year but we didn't have a chance to play against each other. He told me he is reading my reports and I must admit I was very happy to find out he likes them. We talked about Warhammer at a few opportunities and parted with a promise that next time we meet we should definitely gave a game.

When CanCon was on the horizon TO's started to accept grudges and to my surprise I was challenged to fight the first battle! Jonathan decided I need a proper schooling by his tough as nails Warriors of Chaos! I gladly accepted as I knew he will be a challenging but very nice opponent. What can you ask more for? :)

Jonathan brought his Slaaneshi themed Warriors and the list details were as follows:

Slaanesh Warriors - Army List

Sorceror Lord, Level 4, Mark of Slaanesh, Steed of Slaanesh, Unholy Strike, Charmed Shield, Sword of Striking, Talisman of Preservation, The Other Trickster's Shard - Lore of Slaanesh

Game 5 - Lizardmen - Simon - Battle Line

I have faced Simon on many occasions already. We even played against each other on Masters but at the time we didn't know we would. Simon is a hardcore tournament player so I knew I am up to a challenge again. I was very curious what kind of army he came up with for this event and he brought tough Lizards:

Game 97 - Dwarves - 2014/01/24

Game 4 - Dwarves - Sam - Blood and Glory

This time I had to face one of the most difficult armies for me to play against - Dwarves! It was also a Blood and Glory scenario with modification. If one of the army was broken, the game continued but the player who broke the opponent got extra victory points. Sam, against whom I played this round, brought the following:

Dwarves - Army List

Runelord, Anvil of Doom, Shield, M. Rune of Balance, Rune of Spellbreaking, Rune of Stone

Game 96 - Bretonnia - 2014/01/22

Game 3 - Bretonnia - Richard - Meeting Engagement

Meeting engagement scenario is really interesting. First, you really don't know what is going to end up in reinforcements. So you have to be ready to adapt quickly, especially if that level 4 does not show up and you are going second :) Then the fancy deployment zones can throw you out of balance as armies can be really close to each other. After all it is only 12" between deployment zones. The good thing is, however, that you know if you are going first or second. At least against Bretonnians as when they prey you automatically get first turn.

Bretonnians are always a tough nut to crack as their armour and ward saves can deflect a lot of blows directed at them. They are also very fast. Let's see what Richard had in his force in particular:

Bretonnia - Army List

Lord, Knight's Vow, Sword of Strife, Enchanted Shield, Potion of Foolhardiness, Talisman of Luck, Virtue of Heroism
Prophetess, level 4, warhorse, Book of Asur, Mane of the Purebreed - Lore of the Beast

Game 2 - Daemons of Chaos - Adam - Battle Line

In round 2 I was pitched against a very good friend of mine, Adam. We have already played against each other a few times but I think we haven't done so at a tournament yet. Adam has a selection of a few armies and this time he decided to play with very soft daemonic force (at least according to the Swedish Comp of 18!)

Game 94 - Dark Elves - 2014/01/17

Greetings!

Some time before the Masters I attended a local tournament, Hammer of Dave 2. It used Swedish comp (at least 10) and then used that to modify the final result of the game by adding or subtracting the comp difference between two armies. It also had scenarios.

I brought the following army list to the tournament:

In the first game I faced Dave's brand new Dark Elves. We haven't had a chance to play against each other yet although we met many times on various tournaments. It was also the first time I had a chance to play against dark kin. Civil wars are always very bloody and I had no doubts it will be the case this time too. However, with the new book, new units and many other totally new things I was really, really curious about the details.

We also played Dawn Attack scenario that may but does not have to affect even the most carefully prepared plan.

Druchii - Army List

Game 6 - Max - Empire

In the last game I met Max, probably the youngest participant of Masters. Like me, that was his very first tournament of that kind and he was very excited about being among the best players in Oz. Max took his stalwart Empire troopers to show that humans can fight against any odds. :)
